이 작업은 내가 늘 작업실을 오가면서 자동차들 창문에 무수히 꽂혀있던 출장마사지 카드를 한 장 뽑아보면서부터 시작되었다. 우연찮게 모텔촌

한가운데 자리잡게 된 작업실 덕분에 나는 싫든 좋든 길을 오가면서 매일 이 카드들을 봐야 했는데, 호기심에 직접 뽑아 들고 자세히 살펴본 것은

그때가 처음이었다. 그런데 그카드 속의 사진들과 홍보 카피들은 매우 흥미롭고 재미있었다. 마치 현재 한국 남성들의 성에 관한 모든 지형도가 그

카드 속에 담겨 있는 듯 했다. 나는 그 카드 속에 담겨있는 이미지와 텍스트들을 분석해 보고 싶어졌다.
  
이 카드를 바라보면서 제일 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 남성들의 성적 욕망을 자극하는 여자들의 선정적인 몸짓과 풍만한 육체였고, 그런 여자들의

육체와 함께 자극적으로 쓰여진 카피와 최대한 눈에 잘 보이도록 강조한 핸드폰 번호였다.

 

그 카드 속에는 과거부터 지금까지 남성들의 욕망을 가장 잘 불러일으키도록 고안된 몇몇의 정형화된 여성들의 섹시한 포즈가 있었고, 금지된 것을

욕망하는 남성들의 성적 환타지가 난무했으며, 늘 언제나 자신의 성적 욕구를 충족시키기 위해 기다리고 있는 여성이 있는 듯한 착각을 하게

만듬으로서 선택권을 가지고자 하는 남성들의 권력의지적인 욕구를 실현시켜 주고 있었으며, 그 이면에는 이러한 남성들의 욕망을 이용해 인간의

성을 상품화시키는, 즉 돈이 된다면 무엇이든 매매행위를 하고자 하는 자본주의의 원리가 작동하고 있었다. 
  
이 경제행위의 주체인 포주는 자신이 소유하고 있는 여성의 성을 관리하고 보다 많이 판매하고자 소비자의 취향과 욕망을 파악해 이를 자극하는

문구와 이미지로 홍보를 하고 있었다.

 

특히 여고생이나 여대생, 소녀 등 남성들의 성적 환타지에 주로 등장하면서 매춘과는 전혀 상관없는 여성들이 많이 등장하고 있었는데, 이런 여성들은 현실 속에서는 남성과의 섹스가 금기시되어 있고 마음대로 돈을 주고 성을 살 수 있는 여성이 아니기 때문에, 특히 금지된 것을 범한다는 가장

통속적이면서 자극적인 면모가 크기 때문이 아닌가 싶다.

 

특히 순수하고 아름다운 여성임을 강조하기 위해 일부러 성을 매매하는 여성과는 거리가 먼, 오히려 더 풋풋하고 수줍음이 많고 청순한 외모와

분위기의 여성을 모델로 쓰는 경우가 많았다.

 

나는 이 카드 속 여자들의 이미지와 텍스트를 통해 한국 남성들의 성적 환타지를 컬러플하고 아름다운 추상 패턴 작품으로 선보임으로써 화려한

자본주의와 어두운 도시의 이면을 패러독스 형식으로 표현해보고 싶다.

 

이제 성매매는 지하에서 현대 사회의 거대 산업 중의 하나가 되었고, 우리의 일상 또한 은밀하게 포위하고 있다. 아이러니하게도 여성은 성에 있어서

이중의 경계에 놓여있다. 양지에서는 화려하게 스스로의 섹스어필로 돈을 벌고, 음지에서는 직접 하루하루 남자들에게 몸을 팔며 돈을 번다.

남성들은 이러한 여성들을 때로는 눈으로 즐기며, 때로는 몸으로 즐기며 기꺼이 돈을 지불한다. 성은 인간의 가장 본능적인 욕구이기에 이를 이용해

돈을 벌려고 하는 경제 논리에서 벗어날 수 없고, 인간이 멸망하지 않는 한 이를 이용한 산업은 계속 확장될 수 밖에 없다. 
  
작업의 재료로 이용하고 있는이 성매매 카드들은 이미지와 텍스트의 절묘한 조합을 이용해 남성들의 섹슈얼한 상상력을 자극함으로써 결국에는

인간의 성마저 사고팔게 만드는 자본주의 형태의 끝을 보여준다. 그래서이 작품의 형식은 포주가 여자들을 홍보하기 위해 카드를 뿌리는 방식, 즉

포주의 마케팅 방식을 차용한다. 일종의 포스터 홍보 방식으로, 같은 카드를 여러 장 꽂아 반복적인 시각 이미지로 주목성을 높이는 것으로, 이는 한

개의 카드를 여러 장 반복해 각각 개별 라인을 만들고 색감과 포즈를 조합하여 거대한 스트라이프 패턴으로 표현하는 것으로 변형된다. 이때 개별의

카드는 엄청난 물량의 거대한 시각적 이미지로 변형되어 압도적으로 다가오게 된다.
  
점차 스트라이프 패턴은 복잡한 패턴을 가지면서 확장된다. 명품 브랜드의 시그니쳐 라인도 되었다가 일상적인 인테리어와 패션의 아이템으로

쓰이는 패턴으로 변형되기도 한다. 카드의 반복적이면서도 현란한 색감의 라인들은 점점 강도를 높여가며 일상 속으로 파고든다.
  
스트라이프 패턴의 작품들이 남성들의 성적 욕망을 이미지와 텍스트로 적나라하게 보여주고 있다면, Missoni를 표방하는 라인들은 명품을 사고

싶어 몸을 판다는 어느 성매매 여성의 인터뷰와 일반 여성들의 명품에 대한 욕구가 겹쳐진다.

 

fail isle 패턴 작품 속에서는 눈꽃송이, 하트, 십자가 등 순수함으로 가득찬 아이콘 뒤에 숨어버린 그녀들이 어느새 우리의 일상 속으로 서서히

스며들고 있다는 것을 보여준다.
  
그들의 이미지는 이미 우리의 일상적인 영역으로 침범해 들어온 지 오래다. 우리들은 알게 모르게, 혹은 찾아서 그 여자들을 만난다. 거리에서,

영화에서, 사진에서, 인터넷에서, 카드에서, 전단지에서, 잡지에서, TV에서 시도 때도없이 만난다. 때로는 흥미롭게, 때로는 무심하게, 때로는

비판적으로, 때로는 무의식적으로 우리는 늘 그녀들과 함께 있다.   
 

I still distinctly remembered the night when I first bumped into the cards. I got away from the studio later than usual. Inevitably a taxi was the only way I went back home. 

 

My previous studio was on the busy street close to Nambu bus terminal station. There were tons of places to eat, drink, stop overnight and even call girls. I was trying to catch a taxi but the whole streets were packed with people who were drunk and flagging a cab down.

At the same time, discovered My beautiful ladies on a windshield between horribly drunken business men.

 

They were full of half-naked women with sexual poses and suggestive texts.

When I first saw them, they strongly stimulated my curiosity. 
I unconsciously approached and picked up the one, then I took a look at carefully.. that made me let out an exclamation. 

 

It was quite surprising and embarrassing. Those ones had various types of sexual fantasy for Korean guys. That's why I analyzed that what they tempt men and what difference was between the postures, eyes, expression and sex appeal of women in the cards and pin-up girls. That’s why I collect them almost every day and started to make my new artworks with them.

 

'Hot Punk Project' collects and arranges promotional cards to present female bodies as objects. The small cards contain modern men's all sorts of sexual fantasies and topography. The business-card-size medium includes a good amount of information through texts and images. 

 

The artist creates one big image out of thousands of those cards in order to have the audience look at and read them again. From a distance, it's just a combination of abstract colors and horizontal stripes accompanied by unrecognizable images. With a closer inspection, the information on the small cards sends out a shock wave. 

The work provides a strange experience in which totally different images appear and disappear according to time and space. When they're repeated, they emit powerful force and image. In a word, there is an excess of the tremendous amount of image in a moment. 

 

Today we already live in the visual flood of images. The artist installs the small cards in a repeating fashion like posters, product displays, or promotional strategies. The cards are scattered with naked female bodies in various kinds of poses and partially naked ones in seductive poses. 

 

The kitschy colors and the ladies' poses are typical as if they were from pornography. The ladies in the photos are anonymous and the symbols of prostitution. Those perfect products are arranged and distributed in a thoroughly capitalistic way of promotion. They are placed on the windows of parked cars and on the asphalt. 

 

Man can possess one of those bodies (totally different from the images ) by picking up the phone and placing a call like purchasing a product from the shelf. With their bodies and gazes, the ladies in the photos work to instill a sense of temporary happiness into men that dream of reckless fantasies and consumptions in reality. With this one small card, men dream of a fantasy to escape from the everyday rut. 

 

But they end up in anxiety, cowardly escape, and disappointment every time as their fantasy is never realized. Those women in the photos are nowhere to be found. Then where the hell are they?
