[대구문화예술회관] 2018 대구사진비엔날레: 프레임을 넘나들다(Frame Freely)

2006년 10월 최초 시작된 대구사진비엔날레는 지난 2016년 까지 여섯 번을 거치면서 동시대 사진예술의 흐름을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 국내최대의 사진행사로 자리 잡았다. 광주비엔날레, 부산비엔날레와 함께 국내의 3대 비엔날레로 성장한 사진비엔날레가 대구에서 시작된 이유는 오랜 사진역사를 토대로 풍부한 사진 문화를 간직해온 대구의 특별함에서 찾을 수 있다.

해방직후인 1945년에는 한국 최초의 국제사진전을 열었고, 한국사진예술전문학원을 설립하는 등 대구는 대한민국 사진 역사에 큰 비중을 차지해왔다. 특히 70~80년대 이후로 대구 출신 사진가들이 왕성한 활동을 펼쳐왔으며, 현재까지 전국에서 사진전공 학과의 숫자가 가장 많은 도시로 알려져 있다. 이러한 명성에 걸맞은 역사를 이어가고 있는 대구사진비엔날레는 그동안 한국 사진예술의 국제화를 이끌며 사진을 넘어 회화, 미디어아트 등과의 접목을 통해 동시대 시각 예술의 역을 확장해왔다.

2018년, 사진예술의 메카 ‘대구’에서 대구사진비엔날레의 새로운 지평이 열린다.

 

First held in October 2006, the Daegu Photo Biennale, the largest photography event in Korea, has been held on a total of six occasions as of 2016, during which time it has become known as an excellent opportunity for people to get a broad overview of contemporary trends in photography. The reason that the event, which has grown into one of Korea’s three largest biennales (along with the Gwangju Biennale and Busan Biennale), has taken root in Daegu is the city’s rich culture of photography. In turn, this culture has grown out of Daegu’s long history of support for the photographic arts and the fact that the city is home to a significant portion of the history of photography in Korea, as evidenced by the city’s hosting of Korea’s first international photo exhibition in 1945, immediately after the country’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, and founding of a professional photography academy. After the 1970s and 1980s, photographers working out of Daegu became especially active. Today, Daegu is still the city in Korea with the highest number of university photography departments.

The Daegu Photo Biennale is a proud successor of this renowned tradition and history. Over the years, the event has served as a leading force in the globalization of Korean photographic art and contributed to broadening the scope of contemporary visual arts in various significant ways, such as connecting them with painting and media art.

In 2018, the Daegu Photo Biennale will be opening up new horizons in Daegu, the photography capital of Korea.

동시에 사회에 존재하는 고정된 관념, 이념, 가치와 규범을 나타내기도 합니다.
대구사진비엔날레는 프레임을 깨는 것이 아니라 자유롭게 넘나듦과 동시에 그 프레임 속
새로운 사진미학을 추구합니다.

「Freely」는 어떤 프레임에도 구속받지 않는 완전한 자유로움을 상징합니다.
이는 동시대 미학의 특징이기도 합니다.
대구사진비엔날레는 자유롭게 변화하고 있는 동시대 사진예술의
모든 것을 보여주고자 합니다.

그리하여 「Frame Freely」는 대구사진비엔날레 뿐 아니라,
이 시대 모든 이들이 추구해야 할 가치이기도 합니다.

Referring to the frame of a photograph, the term “frame” also represents the fixed ideals,
notions, values, and norms of a society.
The Daegu Photo Biennale aims not to destroy the frame but to freely define its boundaries
and aspire to achieve photographic beauty within it.

“Freely”symbolizes freedom that is absolute, not confined by any frame,
which is a characteristic of the aesthetic of this generation.
The goal of the Daegu Photo Biennale is to highlight all the qualities of the everchanging
photography of our time.

Therefore, the slogan “Frame Freely”embodies the values that we feel should be
pursued by not only the Daegu Photo Biennale but everyone living in the 21st century.
